// GUIDE~ 5 MINUTES

Add your song to Spotify
on your own device.

You can add a SongMe song to your personal Spotify library, play it inside the Spotify app, and drop it into your own playlists. The guide below walks you through it step by step.

Important: This is for your personal library — the song is NOT published to the public Spotify catalog. Only you (and anyone you send the file to) can play it.

/ 01WHAT YOU NEED

MP3 file

Download your song from SongMe as MP3 — the download button is on the song's share page.

Spotify Desktop

The Spotify app for Windows or Mac. Local files can only be added on desktop; mobile only syncs them.

~5 minutes

Really. The hardest part is remembering which folder your browser saved the MP3 to.

/ 02STEPS

Step by step on desktop

  1. 1

    Download the song as MP3

Open your song's share page on SongMe and click "Download MP3". The file lands in your Downloads folder. Remember where you saved it.

  2. 2

    Open Spotify settings

In the Spotify desktop app click your profile icon (top right) → Settings. Scroll down to the "Local Files" section.

  3. 3

    Turn on "Show Local Files"

Flip the "Show Local Files" toggle on. Spotify may ask permission to access your folders — grant it.

  4. 4

Add Source — pick the folder

Click "Add Source" and pick the folder that contains your MP3 (usually Downloads or Music). Spotify scans the folder and your MP3 should show up immediately.

  5. 5

Find the song in your library

In the left sidebar click "Your Library" → "Local Files". Your MP3 is here. Add it to a playlist or hit "Save to Library" — from now on it plays right inside Spotify.

/ 03VIDEO TUTORIAL

Prefer a video?

If text isn't enough, this 3-minute video walks through the exact same flow. Works the same on Windows and Mac.

/ 04MOBILE

How do I get the song on my phone?

Spotify on mobile only plays local files if you have Spotify Premium and you're on the same Wi-Fi as your desktop. On desktop, add the MP3 to a playlist; on mobile, download that playlist for offline listening — the song syncs over. Without Premium you can't play the MP3 inside Spotify on mobile (but you can still play the MP3 in Apple Music, VLC, or any other player on your phone).

/ 05COMMON ISSUES

Something not working?

I added the source but the song doesn't show up+

Check that the MP3 is actually in the folder you added. If you moved it, add the source again. A Spotify restart usually fixes stragglers.

The song shows up but won't play+

Spotify occasionally chokes on MP3s with unusual bitrate or metadata. Try opening the MP3 in another player (VLC, Windows Media Player) — if it plays there, the issue is Spotify's cache. Clear it in Settings → Storage and reload.

Can I add it directly from my phone?+

No. Spotify mobile doesn't allow adding local files directly — you must start on desktop and sync via a Premium playlist. This is a Spotify limitation, not SongMe's.

Can I publish the song so people can search for it on Spotify?+

For that you'd need a music distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, AWAL). Around €20/year. If you want to publish the song publicly, email us at info@songme.app — we can point you to the quickest route.
